What Are the Major Advantages of Single-Ply Roofing?

With the rise in cost in today’s economy, many business and property owners find it very hard to keep their buildings and properties in safe and decent conditions. This also goes for their roofing system, which is a critical part of any commercial facility. So why not choose a single-ply membrane for your roof’s safety? Single-ply is one of the best roofing solutions out there at the moment.

To help you choose the right roofing system, we go over the different types and advantages of single-ply roofing systems for commercial buildings in this blog.

Major Advantages of Single Ply Roofing

1. Easy Installation Process

Single ply roofing is easy to install. It is also suitable for overlaying existing roofs. Additionally, the roofing is significantly less expensive than other roofing systems because of how lightweight it is and how quickly installation can be completed.

2. Damage Resistant

Single ply roofing can handle thermal movement and is resistant to UV ray damage, which makes it durable and weatherproof. There is also a reduced risk of storm damage because the waterproof rubber is difficult to tear or puncture.

3. Eco-Friendly

The single-ply membranes have no plasticizers, fluorides, or chlorides. They are also readily adaptable for green roof installations. There are no carcinogenic fumes or other toxins released during installation. Single-ply flat roof membranes can also be recycled after removal.

4. Easy Repairs & Maintenance

Single ply roofing can be repaired and rewelded years after installation. There is also minimal maintenance required. A square-grid finish encourages slip resistance and makes maintenance and repairs easier to accomplish. Additionally, it gives equipment like HVAC units a level, flat platform.

Types of Single Ply Roofing

1. Thermoplastics

a. TPO Roofing System

Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membrane roofing systems are widely used in the commercial roofing sector. This system has a single layer of synthetic thermoplastic that is reinforced with scrim, creating a naturally reflecting surface that is resistant to UV radiation penetration. Heat-welded seams are used on roofing materials that are installed mechanically or with adhesives. The lifespan of a TPO membrane roofing system varies between 7 and 20 years. The uses of EPDM and TPO roofing systems overlap because of the comparable roll diameters of the two materials.

b. PVC Roofing System

PVC is a synthetic, thermoplastic polymer made of polyvinyl chloride. It has several useful characteristics, such as resistance to chemicals, fire, wind, and moisture. Full adhesion, mechanical fastening, ballasting, or seam welding techniques are used for installation. A PVC roof system installation has a lifespan of 15 to 30 years. It is relatively easier to install because the roofing material comes in smaller rolls than other roofing systems. This characteristic also qualifies the roofing system for smaller-scale commercial and residential applications.

2. Thermosets

EPDM Roofing System

The two main ingredients of synthetic rubber EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) are ethylene and propylene, which are produced from oil and natural gas, respectively. Rolls of white or black EPDM roofing membranes are available in broad sizes. This material's roof systems typically have a lifespan of 10 to 25 years. The installation process is simple for single-ply roofing. It includes adhesion and mechanical attachments that are then supported by gluing the seams. Major commercial structures, including warehouses, office buildings, hotels, schools, and universities, are known to employ EPDM roofing because it is available in large rolls.

For commercial, industrial, and manufacturing establishments, a single-ply roofing system is a most environmentally and economically efficient solution as its advantages far outweigh its cons.
