Brown Spots on Ceiling

One of the first signs that indicate you need roof maintenance is when brown spots appear on the ceiling. These spots can vary in color and size according to their underlying cause. The quicker you respond to the water spots on your roof, the better are your chances of fixing them.

What Are the Brown Spots on the Ceiling?

Brown spots on your ceiling or interior walls are generally water stains caused by leaks. Such spots often happen when your commercial roof systems malfunction or a leak is found in your HVAC units or connected pipes.

What Causes Small Brown Spots on the Ceiling?

One of the common reasons for a dry brown stain on the ceiling of your home is roof leakage. Skylights, plumbing, or air vents attached to commercial roofing systems can also cause roof leakage. This is because fixing these additional accessories requires cutting of the roofing material, which makes your ceiling more vulnerable to leakages.

Although sometimes it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause for these stains, the location of the stain will give us clues regarding what caused the stain. For example, if the brown spots are found below the chimney, it indicates an improperly flashed chimney.

If the brown spots are located below your bathroom exhaust fans, the reason can be condensation due to an uninsulated duct in the attic space that is not tightly connected to a proper roof cap. For stains below plumbing fixtures, the stains are likely a result of the plumbing fixtures themselves.

How to Get Rid of Brown Water Spots on the Ceiling

The first step to getting rid of brown water spots on your ceiling is identifying their actual cause and addressing it so that they do not reappear. Keep in mind that fixing the spots without addressing the underlying cause will only lead to more damage in the long run.

Some tips to get rid of the water stains are:

  • Use water or bleach solution to wipe the stain away.
  • Paint the area once it dries
  • Seal the ceiling area (preferably using new, clean sections of wood) after the damaged area is completely removed.
